Stephen Wunker, Managing Director and US Office Head
As a specialist in new markets, Steve Wunker combines world-class strategy consulting and entrepreneurial skills. He is the author of Capturing New Markets: How Smart Companies Create Opportunities Others Don't, named one of the five Best Business Books of 2011. Steve has a long track record of creating successful ventures for his own companies and on behalf of clients.
As a consultant, Steve was a long-term colleague of Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christensen in building up his innovation consulting practice, Innosight. He has co-written two articles with Professor Christensen and helped to put together his recent book on healthcare The Innovator’s Prescription. He also spent several years consulting at Bain & Company in their Boston and London offices. He has led New Markets Advisors since 2009. In that capacity, he publishes frequently in outlets such as Forbes, Harvard Business Review, and the Financial Times. He has also appeared over the years on Bloomberg and BBC television, and he has been a guest lecturer at Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business.
As an entrepreneur and corporate venturer, Steve has co-founded Yowzit, the leading site for ratings and reviews in Africa and India. Previously, he was Managing Director of Celpay, a mobile commerce start-up created by the pan-African cellular network Celtel. It was sold to the South African financial services group First Rand. He also served as Celtel’s Business Development Director prior to the company being sold to Zain of Kuwait. Additionally, he was CEO of Brainstorm, a developer of mobile software that acquired a start-up he founded, Saverfone. In that capacity he co-founded what is now the global Mobile Marketing Association. Previously, he was responsible for taking the British electronics firm Psion into the cellphone market, creating joint ventures with Ericsson and Motorola, leading development of one of the world’s first smartphones, and bringing to market the world’s first mobile Internet device outside Japan.
Steve has an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Master’s of Public Administration from Columbia University, and a BA cum laude from Princeton University. He has lived in the US, UK, Netherlands, Japan, Ecuador, and Zambia.
Dr. Darren Coleman, UK Office Head
Dr. Darren Coleman, a Ph.D. in brand marketing, has had a career that spans corporate and entrepreneurial start-ups, academia and consulting.
With Wunker, he was part of the team that started one of Europe’s first mobile marketing companies, Saverfone, and while there he created one of the world’s first location-based mobile services. He subsequently developed and implemented the mobile strategy for the UK’s largest Internet Service Provider, Freeserve (now branded Orange Home). At Freeserve he up-sold content from fixed to mobile channels and pioneered event-based billing. Later he moved to Freeserve’s parent company, the leading global mobile network Orange, where he led strategy and implementation in the UK of location-based services such as mapping and proximity searching. He also was responsible for the development of multimedia messaging services strategy across eight countries for the Orange Group.
Darren currently works with both New Markets and as the Managing Consultant of Wavelength Marketing, an agency focused on service-based marketing propositions. He has advised companies and trained throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Japan.
Darren holds a first-class honors degree in business studies and an MA with Distinction from the University of Nottingham, as well as a Ph.D. in brand marketing from the University of Birmingham which focused on service brand development and performance.
Pramod Mohanlal, South Africa Office Head
Pramod Mohanlal is an executive and entrepreneur with long experience in creating new ventures. At the leading South African financial institutions Absa and Nedbank, his responsibilities included progressive responsibility for credit, marketing, e-business, information management, and home loans. His achievements included designing a pioneering home loans program for Absa, in partnership with the bank’s parent company Barclays PLC, to finance cross-border mortgages and provide bundled services to international home buyers.
More recently he was appointed to South Africa's Presidential State Owned Enterprises Review Committee, assessing the country’s policy toward the 200+ firms owned by the state.
In addition to leading New Markets’ work in the region, Pramod is responsible for Yowzit, a firm founded by the New Markets team that is the leading site in Africa and India for ratings and reviews. He is a graduate of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, UNISA, and the executive program of Stanford University.
Dave Farber, Associate
Dave works in a range of fields including customer research, regulatory analysis, and building innovation capabilities. He is a member of the Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and prior to joining New Markets his experience included time at leading law firms in the U.S. and Belgium. He also worked with the start-up Brookfield Renewable Power.
Dave is a magna cum laude graduate of Villanova Law School, where he was on law review. He is also a magna cum laude graduate of American University.
Sebastien Latapie, Associate
Sebastien works across fields including technology and healthcare. He came to New Markets having worked at the boutique consulting firm Argopoint, where he engaged senior executives on projects for Fortune 500 firms. Previously, he was a biochemistry researcher at the Goodman Cancer Center in Montreal, where he worked on a range of initiatives across fields such as kidney cancer and genome analysis. He also served as a Research Assistant at the Boston University School of Medicine, designing experiments to treat melanoma with novel drug systems, and at BioVolution, where he helped to develop a targeted nanoparticle cancer drug delivery system.
Sebastien has a BS in Microbiology and Immunology from Canada's McGill University, as well as a Master's in Biochemistry from McGill. He is a citizen of both the United States and France, having grown up largely in France. He has competed in the US National Snowboard competition.
Zach arrived at New Markets having led business development programs for the Copyright Defense League, a start-up organization seeking out copyright infringements and compensation for owners of large image databases. He also consulted through Vanderbilt University's business school for corporations including Lexus and Bridgestone.
Zach is a summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Duke University, where he concentrated in English and Philosophy. Among other distinctions, he is a winner of the National Merit Scholarship.
Lan Nguyen, Associate
Lan researches new areas of opportunity, conducts customer interviews, and helps to synthesize findings from New Markets' work. Her previous experience includes a position as an industry research analyst with News Patterns, a news intelligence service for the medical and technology industries. She also participated in the IPOs of several companies while working at Mekong Securities.
Lan has a BA in Mathematics, summa cum laude, from St. Anselm College in New Hampshire and comes originally from Vietnam.
